Welcome!

Thanks for visiting Buttons and Pears!

Buttons and Pears is a fledgling creative kitchen textiles company. Born out a need for a better apron and a deep thirst for creating beautiful things, we’re just getting started and have big plans for 2012.

Buttons and Pears aprons are designed with the messy and stylish home chef and adventurous foodie in mind. We hope to encourage a food and cooking revolution and revitalization with creative and beautiful products that are useful and inspiring for cooking adventures. Take risks! Try that paella, cassoulet, bibimbap! Grill some fish, can some tomatoes, bake a pie! Make you’re favorite dish at your favorite restaurant! Wear a Buttons and Pears apron, and do it all!

You should take a look at Aprons and check out what I’ve made so far (including some of my favorites that have sold). If there’s something you see that you like, buy it! I’m making them in very small batches so there are only a few of what you see.

What’s the plan? New apron designs are stewing, but the active prep is going towards making this a little bigger, more exciting and sustainable. In the meantime, if you are interested in a custom apron or wholesale accounts, please contact me.

Finalizing fabrics and the new design

You may be wondering why there haven’t been any new products posted recently. Well, it’s because I’m working to make durable beautiful aprons on a larger scale. That means meeting with a pattern maker, local manufacturers, talking to fabric reps, learning the ins and outs of the garment industry, picking out buttons and working on setting up my own E-Commerce website (Etsy rules say only I or someone in my shop can make things to sell there).

I’m very excited about the new designs, the new fabrics, the new website and the new products. Yes, yes. I’ve been busy!

If you’re tired of checking back to see when I’m going to relaunch, “like” Buttons and Pears on Facebook or sign up for the newsletter.

Labels!

I just received the woven B&P labels in the mail on Saturday. What did I spend my Saturday evening doing? Yup, that’s right! Sewing one into an apron.

So very exciting!

What’s Cooking

B&P has seemed pretty quiet lately, I know. After spending January developing a few new products (book weights! cozies!), I have been using February to figure out how to make this a financially sustainable creative enterprise. I opened Excel and started plugging in a few numbers. I wrote down my ideas for products, target market, strategy, and a few other elements that make up a thoughtful and helpful business plan. I went to a few workshops put on by the very helpful SF Made.

What’s cooking this week? I’m starting to fill out the costs side of what it takes to manufacture a high quality, attractive, cross-back apron here in San Francisco. I’m learning so much, and am grateful for the helpful patience of the various vendors whom I’ve spoken with so far. I am hoping to set up meetings with factories for next week, I just need to bring *final* perfect samples with me when I go (and, by the way, I had lots of fun picking the fabric for this small and special run). Yesterday I met with a fabric broker, and mmm MMM, there’s some yummy stuff out there!

The other piece that I’m working on is understanding demand. Do stores want to sell these aprons that are practical and comfortable AND beautiful? Do people want to buy them? And how much are they willing to pay? How funky can I get? Friends and family have been extremely supportive so far, but it’s time to go beyond what’s comfortable and see what’s possible!

And finally: finding advisors, 2011 taxes, branding, website work, e-commerce transition, photography, research, and drafting new apron designs.

A few updates

Thank you all for visiting my site and staying in touch. Your support has been tremendous as I work on getting things off the ground. I wanted to let you know about a few things:

  1. In case you haven’t seen, I’ve been adding new aprons to Etsy, where you can buy them. You can either search for “buttons and pears” when you land on Etsy’s site, or you can follow this link: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ButtonsandPears. (For those of you who don’t know, Etsy is an online marketplace for handmade and vintage things. After you’ve bought an apron from me (!), I encourage you to wander around and check out the prints, jewelry, knitted lovelies and other delightful things that are available. I often get lost wandering the virtual aisles when I’m supposed to be adding new items to my own shop.)
  2. Facebook! Like us! Tell others to like us! See the new logo! If you’re not of Facebook, stay here, I’ll make sure you know what’s going on too.
  3. I met a lot of lovely people at the New Taste Marketplace and at the Hub Holiday Fair. What I heard is that MEN want fun aprons that don’t go over their necks too. With the help of willing and patient friends, I will adapt my design for men. While fabric selection will have something to do with it, I suspect other things may change too.
  4. Other new things to look forward to: tea cozies, French Press cozies (same idea, different shape), potholders, etc etc. Is there anything that you want for your culinary adventures from Buttons and Pears?

If you’re still looking for a holiday gift for your cooking friend/parent/partner, I ship via priority mail so you have a few more days to order something. If you’re all finished, congratulations! I hope you have a wonderful, delicious and restorative holiday!

If you want to see these lovelies live (and you’re in San Francisco), come to the New Taste Marketplace next Saturday, where I’ll be selling aprons alongside San Francisco’s creative food vendors. My favorite tea company, Red Circle Tea, introduced me to the market and strongly encouraged me to apply! I’m excited!
